What is Knack's Tutoring Hours per Week Maximum?

Here on Knack, our goal is to ensure we are fostering an environment of success for both Tutors and Students. As such, we have a 15 hour/week limit for tutors tutoring on the platform. This is to ensure that tutoring sessions on Knack are promoting effective learning, and avoiding information overload.

Hours will be tracked on a Sunday-Saturday timetable, with each Sunday reseting back to 0 hours for the next week. The hour limit will also take into account any sessions that are scheduled but not yet completed, to ensure you don't greatly exceed the maximum.

Why does Knack have a Weekly Maximum for Tutors?

Knack, being primarily Peer to Peer learning, understands that tutors are also students. Because of this, it is important for Knack to follow the data, which suggests that more than 15 hours working in a week as a student can have negative impacts on academic performance.

Click here for Research and Reasoning as to why this Limit was Implemented:

  • Students working more than 15 hours per week are about 20% less likely to complete their degrees (Ecton, 2023) compared to those who don't work. This is mainly because working larger amounts leads to taking fewer credits per semester.

  • Students working 12 hours per week or fewer (Katarsky, 2020) have stronger grades, while those working more than 15 hours a week are more likely to drop out due to the demands of balancing work and school.

  • Studies by Stinebrickner and Stinebrickner (2003) and Desimone (2008) found a strong negative relationship between GPA and each additional weekly work hour for four-year college students. Pike et al. (2008) observed a negative relationship between employment and GPA for students working more than twenty hours per week, while a positive relationship existed for those working fewer than twenty hours per week on campus. (Paulson, 2021)
