Tutoring as a 1099 contractor

As a Knack tutor, you are classified as 1099 independent contractor unless your learning center has explicitly hired you as a W2 employee. Because of this, all students must be +18 to tutor on Knack.

What information do we collect?

In order to pay you as a 1099 contractor, we'll need to collect some information from you.

General info: We will always need your full proper name, date of birth, a valid U.S. street address (P. O. boxes are not allowed), a phone number, and a bank account information for direct deposits

SSN/ITN: If you earn $600+ per year, you will need to provide your Social Security Number (SSN) or other TIN number. Submitting an EIN as a business is not permitted. Some users may need to submit the last four digits of their Social Security Number before they hit the $600 threshold if our payment processor (Stripe.com) determines additional identity verification is required.

Identify verification/drivers license: You may also be asked to provide an identity verification document like a driver's license or passport if your account is flagged by our payment processor. These requirements come directly from regulators and are intended for preventing crime.

We do not store your SSN/ITN or identity verification information. It's submitted directly to and stored with our payment processor (Stripe.com)

How taxes work

As an independent contractor, taxes are not withheld throughout the year. If you earn over $600 through Knack in the calendar year, we will request your SSN or other TIN in order to send you a form 1099-NEC.

Filing taxes with your 1099-NEC: If you will be filing taxes, you’ll need to appropriately report all income earned through Knack. The IRS requires that we provide you with a 1099-NEC, displaying your earnings, allowing you to properly file your taxes as an Independent Contractor. We will send you the form via email and physical mail and you'll receive your documents no later than February 1. Please keep in mind the tax deadline each year.

How do I appropriately file my taxes? Knack does not provide tax advice. It is your responsibility to file your taxes at the end of the year, but don't worry, we'll let you know when it's getting close to that time of year. We recommend that you seek guidance from a qualified tax service like TurboTax or H&R Block and/or contact an independent tax professional for specific answers to tax questions. For more info, we also recommend checking out the IRS website, TurboTax Tips for Independent Contractors and TutorTax: Reporting Self-Employment Business Income and Expenses.
