Knack 101

Knack is a tutoring platform powered by peer learning. We connect qualified, vetted peer tutors (like you!) with fellow students in need of academic support.

As a Knack Peer Tutor, you have the opportunity to earn money, set your own hours, gain valuable professional experience, and most importantly – make a real impact on your campus.

We know you probably have questions about getting started, so we’ve created this guide to show you how Knack works. You can always check out our online Help Center for answers to other common questions regarding everything Knack. Should you need extra assistance, you can chat with us via the chat bubble on the bottom-right corner of our website or email support@joinknack.com and a member of our team will be happy to help.

Becoming a Knack Tutor

Becoming a Knack Tutor is a piece of cake. All you need to do is click on the ‘Become a tutor’ button on our homepage, click ‘Sign up’ in the window that will pop up, select your college from the list, sign in with your school credentials, and complete five simple steps:

1. Add your phone number

Communication is key. 🔑 We may need to get in touch with you from time to time (we won’t spam you, swear!), so let us know the best number to reach you with in case we need to fire off a quick text.

2. Introduce yourself to tutees with a completed profile

Think of your tutor profile as a first impression – making a good one is important. A complete profile consists of three core elements: your bio, availability, and zip code.

  1. Write a bio that tells potential students a bit about you (your qualifications, experience, fun facts, etc.).

  2. List your availability so students know when you’re available to meet for sessions.

Note: you can change this at any time.

  3. Zip codes are required for setup, but since you can also tutor online, it won’t impact any of your tutoring sessions.

3. Upload your transcript 📤

We want to ensure students are in the very best hands when it comes to tutoring. Uploading a PDF of your official or unofficial transcript will help us determine which courses you can help with. At the start of each semester, we may ask you to provide an updated transcript so we can make sure you're approved to tutor in courses that you recently passed!

4. Set your preferred courses ✅

Have a knack for a particular class? Let us know by adding your preferred course!

5. Verify your identity and bank information 🏦

Our Knack Tutors work hard, and we want to make sure they're paid in a timely manner. These details will help us confirm your identity, so your payouts land in your account.

Note: By default, you will be set up as a 1099 contractor through Knack, unless your school has explicitly hired you as a W2 employee. Not sure what that means? Click here to learn more about tutoring as a 1099 contractor!

6. Answer some demographic questions

We ask for your demographic info to better understand who we’re serving and communicate areas of need to schools, so we can make Knack better for you. We do not share or sell this information and are committed to staying that way.

Note: Each semester, you will be prompted to update your student classification and complete your full demographic information if you haven't done so already.

What to do next

After you complete this process, your application will be sent off for final approval. Once Knack is able to confirm you meet the requirements set by your school, your tutoring account will be approved, and you can start working with students!

While you're waiting to get approved, check out the Tutor Welcome Guide so you can get to know us and the organization a little bit better.

We also highly recommend downloading the Knack mobile app, which is available on both the App Store and Google Play Store.

FAQs

I would like to create an account using my personal email instead of my school email.

If you would like to create an account using a different email, make sure to skip the part where it asks for you to select your college by selecting ‘Skip’ on the top-right corner of the sign-up screen. You will proceed to the next part. Once you are in your new account, you can go back and add your college! To do this, you would go to ProfileColleges → Add college.

I'm having issues signing up with my school account.

You may already have a Knack account, but still need to verify your school! If you already have an account, you will need to log in using an email and password instead of logging in through your school. If you happen to have forgotten your password, you can reset it. Once you've logged in, you can add your college to your account if you still need to.

If you aren't sure if you have another account, or if you don't think this may be your issue, please reach out to Support!

I'm trying to sign up as a tutor, but it keeps asking me to sign up as a student.

If you would like to become a tutor, you need to create an account first. Your initial account allows you to request a tutor, contact tutors, and join sessions. If you would like to become a tutor, you would apply with this account. Once you become a tutor, you will have the option to switch to Tutor mode to tutor on Knack, but will always be able to switch back to Student mode if needed!

I just created an account, and it won't let me verify my phone number. It says that my number is invalid.

There are a couple of reasons this may occur. Firstly, please confirm you are using a U.S. based phone number. Phone numbers from other countries most likely will not receive the message. Additionally, this may be because you have your phone number verified on another account. If you aren't sure whether or not you have another account, or if you don't think these may be your issue, please reach out to Support!

Before you go...

If you experience an issue with the platform or there is an issue related to your account, User Support may reach out to you over chat or email to follow-up. Because of this, we ask our users to try to be as responsive as possible! In those cases, our goal is to solve big problems that affect you and others, and communicating with us enables us to do it in a timely manner.

Since we make updates to Knack every few weeks, you’ll very likely see these problems be solved soon after your valuable input. Naturally, our culture revolves around helping others and we’d very much appreciate your help too!

For more information and support, check out our Help Center or chat with us by clicking the bubble in the bottom right corner of any page.
